Support for SermonSpeaker 5.x is in bugfix mode only, the same as it is for Joomla 3.10.
I will not add any new features to this releases.
Please upgrade to SermonSpeaker 6.x and Joomla 4.x, which is better anyway.

Yes. Everything else works as advertised.
See the attached image to see what I see when inspecting the element.
Checked in Chrome and Firefox on Mac
I now have two subcategories with a total of 3 sermons, but the parent still does not count them.

Ah, I see what you mean now. I thought you were referring to the listing like here

where the items from the subcategories are correctly listed.
The count per category display which you mean is always only for the respective category, not including their children. That's the same behavior you also find for the articles component (and probably all other core components).
