Support for SermonSpeaker 4.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 2.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 5.x and Joomla 3.x, which is better anyway.

I'm using SS 4.0 on Joomla 2.5. When I click on the column headings, (such as title or date), all it does is take me to the home page. i.e. the columns don't sort.

That's strange and sounds like an issue related to 3rd party SEF extension.
But then, upgrading to the latest release may solve it as well.
